He was driving a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta when his vehicle crashed into what is believed to be a tree stump on the side of Division Street in Great Barrington. Emergency responders received multiple 911 calls around 6:09 p.m., prompting a swift response from local authorities.
Despite their efforts, Carlson was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by the Great Barrington Police Department. According to Police Chief Paul Storti, the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities will be looking into several factors, including the role of alcohol and speed, as well as whether Carlson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
The crash prompted police to close a section of Division Street, from Alford Road to Christian Hill Road, for about four hours while investigators gathered evidence. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office. Local fire and ambulance services, along with police departments from Egremont and West Stockbridge, also provided assistance at the scene.
